What is RAR anyway?
RAR (or more commonly referred to as WinRAR) is a compression program offering an original algorithm. This new way to compress files provides greater efficiency, and makes smaller archives -- especially on multimedia files, and archives with many files. RAR also offers self-extracting capabilities as well as disk-spanning (or multi-volumes).
Why should I use RAR?
Why not? You can save disk space by converting your .ARJ, .ZIP, etc. archives over to RAR. RAR integrates into Windows to give you access to compression and extraction capabilities; they're just a right-click away. If you prefer command-line utilities, even the WinRAR version comes with a command-line version. In addition, WinRAR can also create .ZIP archives, so it's like having two products in one!
What are the highlights of the latest version (v3.20)?
- WinRAR now works with high precision time functions!

RAR format now preserves modification, creation and last access time with the precision up to 0.0000001 second. Previous WinRAR and RAR versions stored only the file modification time and only in DOS FAT format with 2 seconds precision.
Modern file systems provide a higher precision – and WinRAR, unlike other software products, already makes full use of this new feature.

Now you can easily test and convert your archives directly from Explorer context menu which appears when you click the right mouse button on a file icon in Explorer or Desktop. You may enable these commands in WinRAR setting options.

The extraction dialog has been split to "General" and "Advanced" parts, because of the new file time options to select the time fields to restore. Also the restoring of NTFS file security information can be controlled in "Set file security". It is now possible to rename files inside of RAR archives. Creating of Recovery volumes was also improved.
